A project assigned during my degree was to be given a word and work out a design brief from it. Responding to the word “fragment” I began to think of its connotations and found myself thinking of mending or putting something seemingly broken or segregated back together. To bring this into a modern design brief, along with my tutor we came up with a charity aimed at helping the homeless, a very pressing crisis being faced in Ireland at present. I began to think of connotations of this “mending” and I thought of a nest which is often culturally representative to a home. A came up with the name “londubh” as it is Irish for blackbird whose presence in nature is symbolic of hope in darkness i.e. “blackbird singing in the dead of night” as The Beatles famously sang.
For the brief itself I created the logo and identity for Londubh but I also created promotional branding for a “Sing Out Sleep Out” charity event. This event brought the community together for live music and to “sleep rough” to raise funds for Londubh and create a sense of awareness and community pride.
